Essential applications like Mail, Messages, and Photos were redesigned, and generative AI has also appeared in other apps like Messages. Free-form app icon positioning and color tinting were added, along with a customizable new paginated Control Center.

New iterations of iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, and visionOS were unveiled on stage in addition to iOS. But the main attention will be on iOS since it may be the largest software upgrade for the iPhone in over ten years.

iOs personal impressions:

Since its release, we have been experimenting with the iOS 18 beta on an iPhone that we use for everyday driving. Comparing the current experience to the problematic iOS 17 Developer Beta from last year, it is remarkably reliable and bug-free overall. There's no need to worry, as the iOS 17.5.1 version still has excellent battery life.

As always, if you can, I'd advise against installing the iOS 18 beta on your daily driver. Even if you choose not to follow my suggestion, please create a complete backup in iTunes or iCloud first.

Nevertheless, there aren't many features in the initial developer beta, with Apple Intelligence being the main absence. Future betas will undoubtedly bring more improvements, but thus far, things are going very well (unlike the contentious iOS 17 beta of last year, which frequently made me angry at my phone).

• game mode: With iOS 18, the iPhone has access to the Game mode on the Mac, which is designed to reduce distractions. App notifications will stop bothering you once you launch a game. This functionality may, of course, be turned off.
